Is Swift Transportation a Dangerous Trucking Company?
While it may not be proper to label Swift Transportation as a company that is dangerous to be on the roads with, it is possible to take a closer look at some of the accidents Swift drivers have been in. According to some research, Swift tractor-trailers have been in 5,350 accidents of some type since 2012. There have been fatalities associated with Swift trucking accidents as well.
Why do these types of Swift truck accidents happen so often? Because the company is large and has so many trucks on the road, it is easy to see why you can expect there to be so many accidents attributed to this company. The company, though, is also known for being the go-to option for those who want to enter the industry. They are a training company, which means many of their truck drivers come to them with no experience and receive usually inadequate training in-house before taking their required licensing exams. This can be a good thing for drivers, as long as they are learning at the very best level possible.
Many people looking for an attorney for Swift truck accidents are doing so because of driver error. Swift Transportation is known for its new drivers and its increasing number of miles on the road. They also have a high turnover rate. That means they are training drivers who eventually leave the industry who may not have a strong commitment to the company. This may be due to things like reckless behavior, distracted driving, driver fatigue, or inadequate training.
Example Swift Settlements for Accidents
There are many, many factors that play a role in the amount of money victims of trucking accidents receive. Take a closer look at some examples of claims that have been awarded to victims of Swift truck accidents over the last few years.
- In 2008, a $15 million settlement was paid out as a result of a Swift tractor trailer that lost control of the rig. The rig crossed the center of the highway and hit the victim’s vehicle. This resulted in a 49-year-old and a 9-year-old dying in the accident. A 28-year-old woman was seriously injured, including suffering head injuries. There was evidence, at the time of the incident, that the driver had falsified the driver’s log, and the vehicle had a tired that was worn.
- In 2013, a $10.8 million settlement was filed after a 61-year-old man, who was walking, was hit by a Swift truck. He was run over by the truck as it turned right, and the plaintiff was walking where he was supposed to in the intersection. The man had traumatic brain injuries, resistor failure, a brain hemorrhage, and multiple other injuries. He suffered MRSA, infections, trauma-induced diabetes, and both hearing and visual loss as a result of the incident.
- In 2008, a $23.5 million claim was awarded after a Swift tractor trailer driver failed to make a U-turn properly in a rest area. He got stuck and backed into oncoming traffic as a result. In doing so, he struck a vehicle that contained the plaintiffs, who suffered numerous losses, including pain and suffering, medical expenses, loss of earning capacity, and loss of enjoyment of life.
There are many other examples of Swift Transportation trucking accidents in San Antonio and throughout Texas. When an accident like this occurs, the driver may be responsible, as may the company itself. However, these companies have very powerful insurance companies and attorneys who are working to minimize any claims paid out.
Keep in mind that Swift trucking accidents can be very dangerous and can leave people unable to function the way they did. If you are in a situation where you are trying to piece together your life after being in an accident with a Swift truck, our legal team wants to help you.
